SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the previous year.
China topped the list, though the country’s output edged lower by 2.1% over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 1,013.0 Mt in 2022. The monthly output during December 2022 totalled 77.9 Mt, down significantly by 9.8% over the corresponding month a year before.

India’s estimated output, at 124.7 Mt, recorded a surge by 5.5% over 2021. The country produced 10.6 Mt of steel during the final month of 2022, marginally higher by 0.8% over the same month a year before. Incidentally, India emerged as one of the two countries in the top ten list to report year-on-year surge in output, the other being Iran. The Japanese output dipped sharply by 7.4% during the previous year to total 89.2 Mt, while its December 2022 output was down by 13.1% from a year before to total 6.9 Mt.
The U.S. produced 80.7 Mt of steel, down by 5.9% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 71.5 Mt, down by 7.2% year-on-year. The annual crude steel output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (65.9), Germany (36.8), Turkiye (35.1), Brazil (34.0) and Iran (30.6).
Turkey recorded highest decline in steel output during the year, with its output recording notable dip by 12.9% year-on-year.
