The crude steel output reported year-over-year decline in all regions across the world, except Africa, Middle East and Russia & Other CIS+Ukraine.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world crude steel production by 63 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totalled 161.4 million tonnes (Mt) in the month of April this year, down by 2.40% compared to the same month a year before.

The largest steel producing region was the Asia and Oceania, whose regional steel output totalled 121.10 Mt in April 2023. The second largest producer was the EU-27 region, with an output of 11.10 Mt. In third place was North America, which recorded an output of 9.20 Mt. The output (in Mt) by the other regions is as follows: Africa (1.3), Russia & Other CIS + Ukraine (7.5), Other Europe (3.5), Middle East (4.2) and South America (3.6).

The crude steel output reported year-over-year decline in all regions across the world, except Africa, Middle East and Russia & Other CIS+Ukraine.

The output by Russia & Other Europe region dropped the most, falling by 17.3% over the year. The EU-27 steel output too witnessed significant decline by 11.7%. The North and South American output dipped by 4.6% and 2.2% respectively. Meantime, Asia & Oceania region’s crude steel output dipped marginally by 1.5% year-on-year.

The monthly output by Africa and the Middle East was up by 4.8% and 4.2% respectively, compared to April 2022.

The topmost steel producing country was China, with an output of 92.6 Mt in April this year. The other key steel producing countries were India (10.7 Mt) and Japan (7.2 Mt).
