SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of August this year.
China topped the list, with the country’s output recording modest surge by 3.2% over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 86.4 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first eight months of the current year totalled 712.90 Mt, modestly higher by 2.6% over the corresponding seven-month period in 2022.

World Crude Steel Output Increased in August
India’s estimated output, at 11.9 Mt, recorded significant surge by 17.4% over August last year. The country produced 92.2 Mt of steel during Jan-Aug ‘23, thus becoming the only country to record double-digit growth over the previous year. India emerged as the country to record highest year-on-year jump in output. The Japanese output edged lower by 2.9% during the month to total 7.1 Mt, while its cumulative yearly output until August this year was down by 3.8% over the prior year to total 58.4 Mt.
The U.S. produced 7.0 Mt of steel, higher by 1.1% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.4 Mt, notably higher by 8.9% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (5.6), Germany (2.8), Turkiye (2.8), Brazil (2.7) and Iran (1.6).
Among the top ten steel producing nations, Iran recorded highest dip in steel output during the month, falling significantly by more than 24% year-on-year.
