SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of September this year.
China topped the list, with the country’s output recording modest decline by 5.6% over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 82.1 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first nine months of the current year totalled 795.1 Mt, marginally higher by 1.7% over the corresponding nine-month period last year.

India’s estimated output, at 11.6 Mt, recorded significant surge by 18.2% over September last year. The country produced 104.1 Mt of steel during Jan-Sep‘23, thus becoming the only country other than South Korea to record double-digit growth over the previous year. India and South Korea were the countries to record highest year-on-year jump in output. The Japanese output edged lower by 1.7% during the month to total 7.0 Mt, while its cumulative yearly output until September this year was down by 3.6% over the prior year to total 65.4 Mt.
The U.S. produced 6.7 Mt of steel, higher by 2.6% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.2 Mt, notably higher by 9.8% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (5.5), Germany (2.9), Turkiye (2.9), Brazil (2.6) and Iran (2.4).
Among the top ten steel producing nations, Iran recorded largest dip in steel output during the month, falling significantly by 12.7% year-on-year.
