SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of October this year.
China topped the list, with the country’s output recording modest decline by 1.8% over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 79.1 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first ten months of the current year totalled 874.7 Mt, marginally higher by 1.4% over the corresponding ten-month period in 2022.

India’s estimated output, at 12.1 Mt, recorded significant surge by 15.1% over October last year. The country produced 116.3 Mt of steel during Jan-Oct ‘23, thus becoming the only country to record double-digit growth over the previous year. Also, India emerged as the country to record highest year-on-year jump in output. The Japanese output edged higher by 2.6% during the month to total 7.5 Mt, while its cumulative yearly output until October this year was down by 3.0% over the prior year to total 72.9 Mt.
The U.S. produced 6.8 Mt of steel, higher by 3.4% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.3 Mt, notably higher by 9.5% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (5.5), Germany (2.9), Turkiye (3.0), Brazil (2.6) and Iran (3.1).
Among the top ten steel producing nations, Brazil recorded highest dip in steel output during the month, falling significantly by more than 10.2% year-on-year.
