SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Site Zero- the world’s largest and modern facility for plastic recycling in the city of Motola is set to open in the month of November this year.
The next-generation facility, built at an investment of around SEK 1 billion by Swedish Plastic Recycling, will have processing capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year of mixed plastics. The plant will use latest technologies including near-infrared sensors, lasers and camera to sort as many as 1,000 pieces of plastic packaging per second. Moreover, it will have the ability to sort up to 12 different types of plastic simultaneously, almost three times the current capability.
The project to expand the currently existing facility in Motola will almost double the capacity of the plant, thus making it capable of receiving all plastic packaging from Swedish households for recycling, using a process that completely eliminates carbon dioxide emissions. The process ensures that no packaging goes into incineration.
The phase two project, planned for 2025, proposes to have the plastics washed and granulated, said Mattias Philipsson, chief executive of Swedish Plastic Recycling. Also, there are plans to cover the building’s roof with solar panels, so as to produce renewable energy, he added.
