SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has announced the finalists of 11th steelChallenge. The winners were picked from the Regional Championship which was held online for a 24-hour period on Nov 30, 2016. A total of 1,479 participants from 37 different countries took part in the challenge. The number of participants witnessed jump of 36% over the previous year.

The awards are divided into ‘Student’ and ‘Industry’ category. The details of finalists in the ‘Student’ category are:-

The World Championship finalists will now participate in the World Championship scheduled for 11 April 2017 in Beijing, China. This round of the competition will use one of the steeluniversity simulations during a 2-hour period. The challenge for this round of competition will be to produce the single best result for the simulation. steelChallenge-11 will utilize steeluniversity’s Basic Oxygen Steelmaking simulation. The competitors will be tasked to produce a grade of steel, meeting technical requirements at the lowest cost per tonne. The simulation will be played on tablets supplied by steeluniversity.

The results of the World Championship will be audited and the winners will be declared on 11 April, 2017. There will be a World Champion in each of the student and industry categories. The award ceremony will have presence of eminent leaders from global steel industry.

The World Championship finalists will be awarded €500, travel allowance of up to €1,500 to participate in the World Championship, Apple iPad tablet after use at the World Championship, World Championship Finalist certificate and Award ceremony with the worldsteel Board of Directors at the World Championship. In addition, the participants qualified to the World Championship in the student category could win up to €1,500 in travel allowance for their faculty advisor to join them at the Championship. The World Champions will be awarded €500, World Champion certificate and steelChallenge-11 trophy.

The ‘Steel’ level sponsor of steelChallenge-11 is China Steel Corporation. Tenaris, Ternium and Tata Steel Limited are the ‘Silver’ level sponsors of the event. The ‘Bronze’ level sponsors are Nucor Corporation and JFE Steel.

The winner of in the ‘Student’ category in the steelChallenge-10 World Championship held last year was Eonsung Lee of Kyungpook National University, South Korea. The winner in the ‘Industry’ category was Marcos Daniel Gouveia Filho from Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) in Brazil.

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. worldsteel members represent approximately 85% of the world's steel production, including over 150 steel producers with 9 of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.
