Wieland to Build New Copper Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The North American subdivision of Germany-headquartered Wieland Group announced opening of a new copper recycling facility in Shelbyville, Kentucky. The facility will be constructed at an investment of $100 million. The work on the project will commence in October this year and the facility is expected to begin operations in late 2022.

According to the company, the new copper alloy recycling and refining facility will serve as a hub for closed-loop recycling. It will install the most modern technology to enable recycling of a wide range of metals and alloys. Upon full operations, the facility is expected to create around 75 well-paid jobs in the region.

The plant will be built on the 79-acre land ac Shelby Drive in Shelby County. It will manufacture semifinished copper and copper alloy products from copper and copper-alloy scrap. The company plans to invest in recycling technology, thus minimizing the need for virgin metals.

Matt Bedingfield, president of recycling at Wieland North America thanked the state of Kentucky and Shelby County for their tremendous support for the project. The facility will pave the way for further growth in recycling in the region, he added.
