SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Gold Council (WGC) has invited comments from interested organizations on the Exposure Draft of the Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMP). The comments can be given in the form of responses to the questions in online survey. Alternatively, comments can also be emailed to the Council. The last date for submission of comments is fixed as 26th April, 2019.
The Council stated that it values inputs from external stakeholders in the development of the Principles. The consultation process ensures good alignment on various issues. Moreover, it is considered as a major contributor in building credibility of the Principles among stakeholders. The Principles are intended to address the needs of investors, downstream supply chain participants and other stakeholders, WGC noted.
The new framework embodies the expectations as to what constitutes responsible gold mining. It addresses the key environmental, social and governance issues for the gold mining sector. Instead of creating a new standard, the RGMP will focus on recognizing and structuring existing instruments under a single framework.
It must be noted that the first draft of the RGMP was published in June 2018 for consultation. Nearly 150 organizations and experts had submitted comments then. The Exposure Draft incorporates the feedbacks received during the first consultation period.
