WFP Negotiations Hits Major Hurdle as Mediators Decide to Withdraw

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The seven-month old strike by union workers at Western Forest Products, Inc. (WFP) is unlikely to end any time soon. The negotiation process suffered a major setback as the two independent negotiators announced their withdrawal. Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers noted that they decide to walk away from negotiations as they were unable to see any basis for a negotiated settlement between the company and the striking workers.

Reacting to the withdrawal decision, Labour Minister Harry Bains noted that he was extremely disappointed with the decision and that the province will try out its options for resolving the impasse. Many in the province are seen badly impacted by the ongoing dispute, Bains noted.

Meantime, Union president Brian Butler announced that he is not surprised by the mediators’ decision.The workers will continue strike until an amicable agreement is reached on various issues raised by them including long hours and irregular work schedules. Also, he opposed any intervention by the government.

Around 3,000 workers and contractors belonging to the USW Local 1-1937 have been on strike since July 1, 2019.
