Weyerhaeuser to Curtail Craven County Lumber Mill Operations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Weyerhaeuser Company will close its lumber mill in Vanceboro, Craven County, North Carolina in September this year, as per state filings. The mill closure will affect approximately 73 jobs.

In accordance with the state filing, the planned closure is expected to be an indefinite curtailment, which will exceed 30 days. It is expected to affect all employees at the New Bern Lumber Mill facility. The filing further notes that all employees have been already notified that their separation from employment will be permanent. The company stated that the mill will close effective 16, September, 2024.

The company is doing its best to minimize the impact of the curtailment by providing opportunities at other Weyerhaeuser operations for certain employees and transition resources to eligible employees, it noted. Already, ten of the affected 73 employees in management, superintendent and human resources positions have been offered jobs at other Weyerhaeuser locations.

In a statement, Weyerhaeuser said that the indefinite curtailment is in response to a combination of site-specific and market-related factors. The decision was not taken lightly and was arrived at after thorough evaluation of the mill’s long-term viability and competitiveness and the challenging market conditions.
