Weyerhaeuser Settled Pollution Claims at Longview Timber Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Weyerhaeuser Company announced that it has reached a settlement with the environmental group Columbia Riverkeeper over lawsuit alleging pollution caused by its Longview timber mill. The environmental group had sued the company two months before over alleged river pollution in Cowlitz County. The lawsuit will be ended in return for upgrades in Longview, Washington mill as promised by the timber company.

As per the lawsuit filed in early-March this year, Columbia Riverkeeper alleged that Weyerhaeuser’s Longview mill has been discharging harmful levels of run-off into the Columbia River, which in turn could hurt oxygen level in fish and increase the growth of harmful bacteria.

By way of the settlement, Weyerhaeuser has agreed to make several changes including rerouting of stormwater pipe, aerating the pond and installing new monitoring devices and filters. It allows Weyerhaeuser to be fined up to $5,000 for each occurrence of future pollution between 2023 and 2025. In addition, the company will also pay $600,000 to the Portland nonprofit Seeding Justice.
