SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading containerboard and packaging manufacturer WestRock has announced new collaboration with Richmond-based food service firm Performance Food Group (PFG) on a program to educate customers about sustainable recycling of used pizza boxes. The program titled ‘Sustainable Choices’ targets pizza box customers and pizza consumers.
WestRock had earlier undertaken a study in order to determine whether grease or cheese contamination levels impact the finished product quality of corrugated cardboard made with recycled content. It was later endorsed by the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA). The study had indicated that corrugated pizza boxes with normal levels of residual grease and cheese could be recycled.
The collaboration offers an online portal, which primarily aims to educate restaurant owners and the public on pizza box recycling choices. The portal also features a ZIP code lookup tool which will provide customers with local pizza box recycling guidelines. In addition, the pizza boxes manufactured by WestRock will have a QR code on the side, which will redirect customers to the online portal.
