SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Minnesota Ore Operations, of United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) in the Mesabi Iron Range of northern Minnesota contributed $1.8 billion to the local and state economy in fiscal year 2022, said the latest economic impact report published by the company. The economic activity generated by Minntac in Mt. Iron and Keetac in Keewatin sustained or supported more than 5,284 jobs, the impact report added. Earlier, the company had announced that its Pennsylvania operations had generated huge economic impact.
The $1.8 billion total economic impact included $911.9 million from direct impact and $865.4 million in indirect/induced impact. The estimated 5,284 jobs supported comprised of 1,865 direct and 3,419 indirect/induced.

Through its operations and capital spending during the fiscal, the steelmaker generated $141 million in state and local taxes in Minnesota. The company has contributed more than $154 million since 2018 to public schools in the region through the Minnesota Permanent School Fund. In FY22, the company employees contributed an estimated $1.8 million in value to local charities.
David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer, U. S. Steel stated that the company is thrilled to have made such tremendous contributions throughout the iron range of Minnesota.
