U.S. Steel Mills’ Capacity Utilization Hit 85%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) signalled significant surge in output during the week ended August 21, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 27.2% over the previous year.

The raw steel output by the U.S. mills totalled 1.877 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 85.0%. The production had totalled only 1.476 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 65.9% during the same period a year before. Also, the production during the week recorded marginal increase by 0.4% when compared with the production of 1.869 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 84.7% during the prior week.

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production totalled 60.173 million NT until the week ending August 21, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 80.4% during this period. The production till date has increased by 19.8% from 50.243 million NT during the same period last year. The capability utilization rates were up from 66.6% a year before.

The mills in the Southern region accounted for more than 43% of the total weekly raw steel production by the country. The regional output totalled 815,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-149, Midwest-201, Great Lakes-636 and Western-76.
