SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests marginal dip in steel shipments during the month of March this year compared with the same month in 2021. On the contrary, the shipments registered modest increase over the prior month.
According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.836 million net tons in March 2022. This is marginally lower by 1.4% from the shipments of 7.950 million net tons in the same month a year before. The shipments during the month recorded modest surge by 8.3% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.233 million net tons in February this year.
The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 22.826 million net tons during the initial three-month period of the year. This is modestly higher by 3.3% when matched with the year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 22.106 million net tons during the initial three-month period in 2021.
The report also provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the first three months of 2022. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip during this period have surged higher by 2% from the previous year. The shipments of hot rolled sheet registered 2% year-on-year decline, while those of cold rolled sheet were down by 6%, compared with the year before, AISI noted.
