SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based US Steel declared temporary layoffs at its Great Lakes steel making facility in Michigan. The company issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices to fewer than 200 employees at the plant. This follows the decision by the company to halt production at the plant.
According to company press release, the layoffs at the plant are likely to last beyond six months and are expected to affect the operations of the entire facility, starting from blast furnace operations to finishing operations.

The layoffs directly questions the President’s claim that steel sector reforms including imposition of 25% tariffs on foreign steel imports have resulted in significant resurgence of domestic steel industry. Although prices did bounce back immediately after the announcement, they have seen dramatic fall afterwards.
The union representatives hinted at planned layoffs at Gary Works facility in Indiana. However, the company spokesperson clarified that it currently expects no employment level changes at the Indiana facility.
