U.S. Raw Steel Output Spiked, Driven by Southern Region

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) signalled significant surge in output during the week ended June 5, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 46.3% over the previous year.

The raw steel output by the U.S. mills totalled 1.840 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 82.3%. The production had totalled only 1.258 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 56.2% during the same period a year before. Meantime, the production during the week recorded marginal uptick by 0.2% when compared with the production of 1.836 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 81.5% during the prior week.

Southern Region Propels Surge in U.S. Raw Steel Output

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production totalled 39.546 million NT until the week ending June 5, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 78.3% during this period. The production till date has increased by 12.1% from 35.292 million NT during the same period last year. The capability utilization rates were up from 69.5% a year before.

The mills in the Southern region accounted for nearly 43% of the total weekly raw steel production by the country. The regional output totalled 787,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-139, Midwest-193, Great Lakes-646 and Western-75.
