U.S. Plastics Pact Launched Roadmap 2.0 to Cut Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Plastics Pact released Roadmap 2.0- a strategic plan aimed at helping companies change the way they design, use, and reuse plastics in their packaging. It focuses on practical measures to transform the use of plastics.

This is an extension to the original Roadmap to 2025 launched earlier, which has delivered significant progress in plastics circularity. As a result, the use of problematic or unnecessary plastics has reduced from 14% to 8% over the past four years. The amount of reusable, recyclable, or compostable plastic packaging has recorded notable jump from 37% to 47.7%. Also, the recycled content in packaging has increased from 7% to 9.4%.

Building on the above achievement, the Roadmap 2.0 sets several ambitious goals in the journey forward. It proposes to have all plastic packaging to be designed and manufactured to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable. It aims elimination of problematic plastics by 2030 and reduction of virgin plastic by 30%. Furthermore, it intends to create necessary infrastructure to recycle at least half of the total plastic packaging.

Emily Tipaldo, Executive Director of the U.S. Plastics Pact stated that Roadmap 2.0, whose primary target is reuse, is an evolution. Also, he reiterated the commitment to work in collaboration with its Activators and stakeholders in achieving the ambitious targets.
