The U.S. lumber industry is forced to compete with unfairly traded softwood imports from Canada, funder by their government, it alleged.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the U.S. Lumber Coalition, this week the Canadian government unveiled additional softwood lumber producer subsidies. It claimed that unfairly traded softwood imports from Canada, which are supported by their government, force the U.S. lumber industry to compete.
On March 19, 2025, the Government of Canada announced more than $11.3 million in funding through the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) initiative for up to six projects, according to Andrew Miller, Chairman of the U.S. Lumber Coalition. Up to $10 million of a project's eligible costs can be awarded as grants. According to Miller, the initiative has so far provided funding for more than 60 capital investment projects.

Additionally, the Canadian government announced that more than 50 forest sector initiatives for Indigenous communities would receive more than $7 million in funding through the Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI) program.
According to the U.S. Lumber Coalition, President Trump's first term as president has seen significant progress with the antidumping (AD) and countervailing duties (CVD) against unjustly traded Canadian softwood lumber. In order to reduce lumber flows from Canada and increase the supply of lumber from the United States, it demanded that trade regulations be fully enforced going forward and that new laws be imposed if needed.
