SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Lumber Coalition welcomed President Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian lumber imports.
President Trump has correctly said that the United States does not require unjustly traded Canadian timber imports, according to Andrew Miller, Chairman of the U.S. timber Coalition. Trump's first-term tariffs have resulted in large investments in sawmills and increased domestic market capacity. He pointed out that the domestic industry's share of the overall U.S. market had reached its best levels since the 1970s.

The new mills along with expansion of existing mills have delivered a capacity addition of around 8 billion board feet since 2016. The U.S. has generated 30 billion more board feet of softwood lumber over this time, which has helped the sector make up for the drop in unjustly traded Canadian imports.
Miller believed that as long as Canada kept dumping and subsidizing, the trade cases would have to go on. We must oppose any attempt to advance a Canada First trade agenda at the expense of homegrown American workers and industry. To optimize U.S. lumber production, U.S. trade regulations must be enforced, Miller continued.
According to Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the U.S. Lumber Coalition, taxes on Canadian lumber imports that are unfairly traded have improved American supply chains. He demanded that trade regulations be fully enforced by the US government.
