According to White House, the comprehensive strategy aims to target plastic pollution at production, processing, use, and disposal. It outlines existing as well as new federal actions to reduce the impact of plastic pollution throughout the plastic lifecycle. Furthermore, it calls for sustained and collaborated efforts with all stakeholders to address the plastic pollution challenge.
The strategy outlines a goal, by which it aims to phase out federal procurement of single-use plastics from food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027 and from all federal operations by 2035. Also, it aims to achieve net-zero procurement of single-use plastic products by 2050. The proposed action is expected to significantly impact the supply of plastic products.
As per estimates provided by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the world produces more than 460 million metric tons of plastic every single year, equivalent to the weight of over 3,000 blue whales.
