U.S. Exports of Scrap Plastics Declined 29%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. exports of plastic waste and scrap witnessed substantial decline in the year-to-date period through July this year. In accordance with the most recent data published by the U.S. Census Bureau, the exports tumbled by nearly 29% over the previous year to total $124.72 million. The country’s exports had totalled $174.48 million in January to July in 2019. Meantime, the monthly exports were valued at $23.15 million in the month of July ‘20.

The primary export destination was Canada, which imported $31.85 million worth of scrap plastic from the U.S. The U.S. exports to Canada recorded nearly 19% year-on-year decline. Canada accounted for almost 26% of all U.S. shipments. The second largest importer was Malaysia, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $14.64 million. The exports to that country surged higher by almost 113%. In third place was Hong Kong with $12.04 million worth of imports from the U.S. The other key destinations for U.S. plastic scrap exports were Mexico ($10.04 million) and Vietnam ($6.34 million).

Meantime, the U.S. imports of plastic waste, scrap recorded decline by 11% through the initial seven-month period this year to $119.71 million. The imports had totalled $134.6 million in Jan-July ‘19.
