Unifor Stands Up for Northern Pulp's New Effluent Treatment Facility Project

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The leadership of Unifor has expressed continued support to the new effluent treatment facility (ETF) project at Northern Pulp. The company had recently submitted a new focus report, as ordered by the provincial authorities, which is currently under review by the Nova Scotia Ministry of Environment.

Jerry Dias, Unifor National President noted that the union and its members fully support the project. He expressed confidence that NSE will evaluate the project and come to an appropriate conclusion that protects the environment and supports over 230 workers at Northern Pulp.

According to Unifor, the proposed Focus Report has been submitted after an extensive scientific study. The new treatment facility will replace the existing plant with a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility which will deliver dramatic improvement in the way treated wastewater is discharged. The proposed ETF will transform Northern Pulp to one of the most environmentally responsible mills in teh entire North American region.

In addition to meeting all requirements of the Nova Scotia Environment Act, the new facility will comply with several other essential regulations. In accordance with data provided by the Forest Products Association, Northern Pulp performs as well or better than majority of other mills in the region. Furthermore, it highlighted the Northern Pulp’s excellent record in improving its performance.
