UN Programme Launched Fresh Project to Eliminate Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) , in partnership with several entities in Costa Rica, has launched a new project to eliminate nearly 200,000 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic, which would otherwise end up in polluting the environment. The joint ‘Plastic-Free Landscapes Project’ aims to eliminate tons of plastic waste from terrestrial and marine ecosystems by 2030.

As per project outline, the proposed processing plant in Pedregal, Heredia province will be capable of accepting most of the non-recoverable plastics from the region. The collected plastics will be transformed into raw materials for construction using the latest CRDC technology.

In addition, the project will see installation of barriers in rivers to collect plastics. Accordingly, four plastic waste collection fences will be installed in four of the most polluted rivers in the country- Virilla in San Antonio Belen, Grande Tarcoles in Orotina, Parismina in the Caribbean and Terraba in the Southern Zone.

David Zamora, Pedregal’s commercial director and CRDC’s technical director noted that the joint efforts will provide a definitive and sustainable solution to all plastic waste, thus making Costa Rica the first country in the world to solve the plastic problem.
