Turkish Paper and Board Making Capacity to Hit 6 Million Tons Per Year

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Turkish demand for finished paper and board is expected to witness notable growth in the years to come. This should lead to boost in recovered fiber imports by the country.

According to Ercan Yürekli of Istanbul-based recycling and trading firm Yürekli Kağıt, the Turkish paper and board making capacity is expected to exceed 6 million tons per year by 2023. The company plans to install additional paper machines to make containerboard. The recycling based machines promises to increase scrap paper intake significantly. Many other Turkish recycling firms are gearing up to take advantage of the increased demand situation, he added.

The company currently has a facility in Romania, which collects and bales fibers, which are then sent to Turkey via trucks. It uses sea containers to ship fiber from other countries in the European region including Germany and the Netherlands. The setting up of the new capacity will extend the supply lines further, including to North America.

The Covid-19 has badly impacted several sectors of global economy. However, paperboard packaging and tissue paper have managed to remain resilient during this period. The company hopes that Turkey will likely import up to 2 million tons per year of fiber by 2023, thus making it the world’s biggest fiber importer.
