SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi arrested a Turkish national involved in smuggling of gold into the country.
According to Customs Department, the passenger arrived at Terminal No. 3 of the airport from Istanbul. Upon interception and subsequent body and baggage check, the officials recovered seven pieces of gold weighing more than 5 kilograms. The gold was found hidden inside the metallic walls of biometric locker fitted in the stroller bag. The recovered gold, worth around INR 2 lakhs, was seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act.
Upon interrogation, the passenger admitted that he was involved in smuggling of over 16 kilograms of gold worth over INR 5 lakhs before.
In another incident, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel seized around 1.5 kilograms of gold concealed in an abandoned bag at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad. The gold bars painted black were found concealed in a motor found in the bag. In another incident, three passengers were caught at the Ahmedabad International Airport for attempting to smuggle gold by hiding them in their rectum.
The high customs duty on gold imports has led to notable rise in gold smuggling acts in the country.
