Trinidad & Tobago Scrap Metal Act Tabled in Parliament

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The government of Trinidad & Tobago will table the Scrap Metal Act 2022 in Parliament today. The government move has been welcomed by several industry trade bodies including the Trinidad & Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association (TTSIDA).

According to Allan Ferguson, President, TTSIDA, the bill is likely to regularise the sector. However, it raised concerns that the current form of the bill will not benefit everyone involved in the sector and that it may lead to closure of many smaller yards.

Meantime, the Association pledged its continued support and co-operation towards implementation of the provisions of the new bill, which it expects to contribute towards betterment of scrap iron industry in the country.

The Scrap Metal Act would implement a licensing system for scrap metal dealers, collectors and scrap yards. The licenses would be issued for a period of three years, the fee of which would be higher for dealers in comparison with collectors. The loading of scrap metal for export must be shot on camera or carried out in presence of scrap metal inspectors. Henceforth, the industry activities will be closely monitored by the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

TTSIDA urged the administration to proclaim the bill in the shortest possible time, once passed by the Parliament.
