SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): New trash and recycling bins will be delivered to city residents as Waste Management (WM) gets ready to replace Republic Services as the city’s trash hauler on January 1. Starting Dec. 2, WM will start delivering new 96-gallon trash and recycling bins to all customers. Officials have told the city they should have all bins delivered by Dec. 20.
The Common Council voted to hire WM for trash services after putting the city’s trash service contract out for bid earlier this year. The contract calls for a new 5½-year agreement effective Jan. 1, 2025, to take regular trash removal for residents for $21.69 per month, an increase over the current $15.66. The rate for senior citizens would rise from $12.74 to $17.55 per month.
Republic has been Mishawaka’s trash removal vendor since 2008 and has received several contract extensions, the last one received in 2020. In information released by the city, residents should continue to use their current Republic bins through Dec. 31. Matthew Lentsch, executive director of Development and Governmental Services, said customers should not use the new WM trash bins until January 1.
