Trade Body Published Most Recent U.S. Raw Steel Output Data

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests marginal increase in raw steel production over the previous week. On the contrary, the production was down substantially when compared with the same week a year before.

The U.S. raw steel production totalled 1.377 million net tons in the week ending on August 15, 2020. This compares with the production of 1.354 million net tons during the previous week. The production has risen by 1.7% week-on-week. The production during the most recent week was down almost 25% from the prior year week. The country’s raw steel production had totalled 1.841 million net tons in the week ending August 15, 2019.

The capability utilization rate at U.S. mills during the week was 61.5%. This compares with 79.1% in the same week a year before and 60.4% in the prior week.

The adjusted year-to-date production totalled 48.833 million net tons through August15, 2020, which is down by more than 20% from 61.235 million net tons produced during the comparable period in 2019. Over the year, the capability utilization rates too dropped substantially from 80.7% to 65.9%.

The Southern region production totalled 548,000 net tons, followed by Great Lakes with 466,000 net tons. The Midwest and North East region produced 159,000 net tons and 133,000 net tons respectively. The Western region recorded 71,000 net tons production.
