The Royal Mint Rolled Out its Largest Ever Gold Coin

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The British Royal Mint has unveiled its largest-ever coin in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The unique hand-crafted gold coin weighs 15 kilograms and was commissioned by a private UK collector in recognition of Her Majesty’s historic 70-year reign. It has a diameter of 220 mm and is made of fine gold. The coin was designed by renowned coinage artist John Bergdahl.

The coin features a commemorative design on both sides that have been personally approved by The Queen. The reverse side comprises a crowned EIIR cypher surrounded by roses, daffodils, thistles and shamrocks, representing the UK. The reverse design also includes a symbolic privy mark of the St Edward’s Crown worn positioned above the number ‘70’. Meantime, the obverse side of the coin comprises a special commemorative design depicting The Queen on horseback.

The making of the coin required almost 400 hours of craftsmanship and refinement, and state-of-the-art engraving and laser technology.

Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint noted that the coin is aunique piece of art that will endure as a legacy of the occasion for generations to come. Furthermore, it represents the Mint’s growth as the home of precious metals in the UK, he said.
