Tetra Pak, Nigerian Paper Mill Signed New Agreement on Carton Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tetra Pak West Africa has signed a new recycling agreement with Onward Paper Mill to boost sustainable recycling of Used Beverage Cartons (UBCs) in Nigeria. This is the first-of-its-kind agreement in the entire West African region.

In accordance with the terms of the agreement, the partnership will focus on educating the general public on waste management systems. It aims to reduce the presence of post-consumer beverage cartons in landfills and dump sites.

Various campaigns will be organized in schools and communities to boost collection of UBCs. The cartons thus collected will be used as a base raw material to produce paper by Onward Paper Mill Ltd. The mill, which currently uses wood, has an annual capacity to produce approximately 20,000 tonnes of paper, boards and tissue papers. KunleObagun, executive chairman, Onward Paper Mill Ltd, expressed his pleasure over the signing of the partnership.

Mr. Aruna Oshiokamele, Managing Director, Tetra Pak West Africa noted that the partnership will protect the planet by contributing to the circular economy. The efforts by the company have increased the number of global carton recycling facilities from 40 in 2002 to 170 in 2020.
