SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tata Steel’s Indian recycling business will offer domestically produced shredded scrap materials to local Indian market.
According to Yogesh Bedi, chief of Tata Steel Recycling Business, the company is in final stages of commissioning of a shredder during this month. This would allow the company to offer domestically produced shredded scrap. The initial capacity of the shredder is 350,000 tons per year, which will be increased further in the coming year.
The company will make shredded ferrous scrap from obsolete end-of-life vehicle (ELV) scrap, which will reach the market under the Tata FerroShred brand name. This adds to the existing offering of around 150,000 tonnes per year of baled ferrous scrap under the Tata FerroBaled brand name.

ata Steel noted that along with increased steel production in the country, there has also been a shift to increased consumption of domestically produced scrap materials, mainly on account of shorter lead times and lower inventory carrying costs. The recent policy measures, by the country’s government, including ELV scrappage policy, too have provided added boost to the domestic scrap recycling sector. The vehicle scrappage scheme is likely to generate around 4 million tons per year of ferrous scrap per year.
