SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tanzanian police said Wednesday they have recovered 6.753 kilograms of gold that were stolen from a gold mine.
Janeth Magomi, the Shinyanga regional police commander, said the gold worth 9.2 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 3.68 million U.S. dollars) was stolen a month ago at the Bulyanhulu Gold Mine, an underground gold mine in the Shinyanga region located 55 kilometers south of Lake Victoria.
"Following the theft of the gold, police in collaboration with other security agencies launched a special crackdown that led to the recovery of the gold on Tuesday," she told a news conference.
Magomi said the gold was recovered in a house in the Shinyanga municipality following the crackdown conducted from July 26 to Aug. 22.
She said police have arrested a number of traders in connection with the stolen gold, and investigations are still underway.
