SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) published preliminary data for world lead and zinc supply and demand for the initial quarter of the current year.
According to data, world refined lead metal supply exceeded demand by 19 kt during Q1 2020. The reductions in China, India and Kazakhstan resulted in 3.4% decline in global lead mine production. Also, the lower output in China led to 7.1% decrease in global lead metal production. Refined global lead metal usage recorded 7.4% year-on-year decline, primarily on the back of substantial decline in Chinese consumption. Demand continued to remain lower in Europe, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the U.S.
The lead mine production totalled 1.099 million tonnes in Jan-Mar ‘20, whereas the global lead metal production was 2.714 million tonnes. The metal usage totalled 2.695 million tonnes during this period.
In accordance with the preliminary data compiled by the ILZSG, the global market for refined zinc metal was in surplus by 239kt over the first three months of 2020. The world zinc mine production edged lower by 0.5%, whereas the refined zinc metal production surged higher by 3.2%. The demand for refined zinc metal registered 4% decline.
The global zinc mine production totalled 2.970 million tonnes in Jan-Mar ‘20, whereas the global zinc metal production was 3.314 million tonnes. The metal usage totalled 3.074 million tonnes during this period.
