SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso announced its decision to build a new granulation and packaging plant for lignin. The plant will be built at an investment of approximately Eur 14 million at its Sunila mill in Finland. The proposed plant will allow for easier packaging and handling of lignin compared to powder and wet form.
Currently, lignin produced at the Sunila Mill by the company, is delivered as dusty powder or as wet lignin. The same product from the new plant will have multiple uses, such as in batteries for electric vehicles, as bio-based binders in plywood and as material for carbon fiber, said company press release.
The granulated lignin will ensure more efficient way of handling dry lignin and delivering it in bulk containers. The packing of dry powder requires special equipment, whereas packing of granulated lignin is easier and faster. The plant will result in significant savings in both packaging and transportation costs for the company, said Markus Mannstrom, Executive Vice President, Biomaterials division-Stora Enso.
The construction of the plant is expected to commence by end of Q2 next year and is slated for Q2 2022 completion.
The Stora Enso Sunila mill has an annual lignin production capacity of 50,000 tonnes. The company is the world’s largest kraft lignin producer.
