Stimson Lumber to Invest in New Sawmill Line at Oregon Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stimson Lumber Company announced plans to make investment of $50 million into a new high-speed sawmill line at its Forest Grove, Oregon facility.

The proposed multi-million dollar investment at the nearly century-old sawmill will mark a significant upgrade. It demonstrates the company’s commitment to the future operations at the facility. The investment will further boost the potential market opportunities for private timber owners.

Upon successful completion of the upgrades, the new sawmill line will have capability to process logs between 4-inch and 16-inches in diameter at a rate of 70, eight-foot blocks per minute, thus making it the highest speed sawline in the entire North American region. The investment will triple annual production from the current levels of 100 million feet of two-by-four and two-by-six studs.

The new technology may require fewer employees once operational, said Andrew Miller, CEO, Stimson Lumber. Incidentally, the sawmill currently employs 90 people. The technology presents the company with an opportunity for it and other timberland owners to efficiently process smaller diameter timber that would otherwise be sold for pulp. This in turn will be a big win for landowners, Miller added.
