SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A manufacturer near Calvert received three years of probation and was fined for violating the Clean Air Act, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama announced today.
AM/NS Calvert, which operates a steel production plant along the Tombigbee River, will have to pay a $750,000 fine.
According to court documents, the business includes an acid regeneration plant. It’s required to use a certain caustic solution to meet emission standards.
In August 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency and Alabama Department of Environmental Management conducted a joint inspection of the plant. During that inspection, they found out the facility wasn’t using caustic solution, according to court documents.
Further investigation revealed the AM/NS Calvert acid regeneration plant did not use caustic solution for about 700 days during a two-year period, federal prosecutors said.
