SAIL Steel Plant Announced Significant Capacity Expansion
SAIL has set up a unit for production of HH rails at the new Universal Rail Mill (URM) at its Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) located in the state of Chattisgarh. The unit will be capable of producing 1.2 million tonnes per annum of URM. The setting up of the unit is part of its modernization programme for BSP, which is being carried out at a cost of around INR 1,200 crore.
The rails will be made using ‘head hardened’ technology, which makes use of a special heating process. The rails will be capable of withstanding 50% higher pressure than normal rails. The company hopes targets to produce rails this year itself. The HH rails are at the testing stage currently. The production volumes will be finalized after successful trials, said the company.
The Indian Railways expects a requirement of 1.8 lakh metric tonnes per annum of high grade heat treated rails, for which SAIL will be a major supplier.
