SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sonoco announced new partnership with robotics major AMP Robotics to enhance paper can recycling. The new partnership will introduce a new material category within the latter’s neural network specific to rigid paperboard cans. This will result in increased recycling rates for paper cans with steel bottoms manufactured by Sonoco and other manufacturers.

AMP’s neural network platform AMP Neuron is featured with high frequency recognition of paper cans with steel bottoms. It has already updated its software to enable recognition of such materials for sortation. All material recovery facilities employed with an AMP Cortex intelligent robotics system could efficiently sort Sonoco’s paper can to the desired target stream.
Elizabeth Rhue, Staff Vice President of Sustainability at Sonoco said that the partnership represents another step forward in its growing portfolio of sustainable packaging solutions. The use of AI techniques will promote delivery of end-of-life solutions across our consumer and industrial packaging platforms, she noted.
Meantime, Matanya Horowitz, Founder and CEO of AMP Robotics commended Sonoco for being early to recognize the implications of AI in the sorting process.
