SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hartsville, S.C.,-headquartered packaging major, Sonoco, announced major investment in the United States and Canada recycled paperboard mill system. The Board of Directors of the company gave approval to $83 million investment, aimed at strengthening its uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) mill system in both the countries.
As part of the investment, the Hartsville, S.C., corrugated medium machine (No. 10 machine) will be converted into a state-of-the-art URB machine by early-2022. The new Hartsville machine would be the largest and lowest cost URB machine in the entire world and will have the capacity to produce approximately 180,000 tons of high-value paper grades. Also, the investment will mark the company’s exit from corrugated medium market.
The conversion project will commence with the development of a new recycled fiber stock prep system. The design work for the same is expected to begin in H2 2020. The mill system optimization program will also deliver capacity boost at Sonoco’s Wisconsin Rapids, WI, mill.
Also, the company announced permanent closure of its No. 3 URB paper machine in Hartsville and its Trent Valley, Ontario, Canada paper mill, on account of adverse market conditions.
