SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major Smurfit Kappa has been selected as one of the top 25 inspiring companies in Colombia by the National Businesses’ Association in Colombia (Asociación Nacional de Empresarios de Colombia). The prestigious award is in recognition of Smurfit Kappa's efforts in promoting and supporting recycling efforts and building of effective recycling infrastructure.
The company, through a charitable foundation in Colombia, has been supporting nearly 30 recycling organizations. Since its inception in 2014, more than 1,700 people along with their families have benefited from the project. Smurfit Kappa has been playing a key role in transforming working environments, providing training and education on recycling, in addition to generating hundreds of career enhancement opportunities. It has been actively involved with various activities such as workshops. Further, it has made significant contributions through supply of raw materials and donation of machinery to promote recycling efforts.
Alvaro Henao, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Colombia stated that the company is proud to receive the award. The award is in recognition of the company's commitment to the entrepreneurs who contribute to waste collection across Colombia. The company will continue its efforts to design products that are easily recycled. Furthermore, it will focus on improving efforts to collect more waste through its recycling facilities.
As per government estimates, Colombia recycles only 17% of the 12 million tonnes of solid waste produced per year.
