SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sims Metal Management (SMM) announced publication of its 2018 Sustainability Report. The report titled “One Sims Many Faces” outlines the progress made by the company against its 2020 global sustainability goals. It provides detailed analysis of projects implemented with the aim of minimizing the impact of its operations on the environment and society.
The company has reported significant progress in sustainability achievements. When compared with FY14 baseline, the total recordable injury frequency rate has dropped sharply by 55%. The use of electricity has declined by 19%. SMM has achieved 14% reduction in fleet fuel consumption. The report also states that automotive shredder waste (ASR) registered notable decline by 18% during this period. Along with achieving 24% savings in water consumption, it also reported 8% reduction in carbon emissions.
FY18 was the safest year in the company’s history. More than 80% of the company locations reported zero recordable injuries. It must be noted that the company had introduced various safety initiatives at workplaces with the aim of achieving world-class safety performance. The company reported a total of 1,677 incidents.
The report noted that the company is well on track to meet its 2020 goal of 10% reduction in carbon emissions from its FY14 baseline.
SMM participated in as many as 270 community projects and sponsorships across the globe in FY18.
