SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The leading global metal recycler, Sims Metal announced that it has invested in green technology solutions at its Allens Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island site.
The investment replaces its previous diesel car flattener with a new electric model. The new equipment is expected to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from the site by 9.6 tons per year. This is in line with the company’s previously stated sustainability initiatives. Furthermore, it conforms to the State of Rhode Island’s 2021 Act on Climate.
Commenting on the development, Mike Kiwanis, Director of Operations for Sims Metal, the company has invested more than $300,000 to deploy the electric car flattener, which will ensure efficient flattening of end-of-life vehicles before they are transported for recycling. The significant investment in the new greener technology will ensure that its operations will have minimal impact on the environment, he added.
Mayor Brett P. Smiley applauded the efforts of Sims Metal to reduce its carbon footprint to every extent possible.
Sims Metal has purchased the electric car flattener from South Dakota-based Overbuilt. With a weight of approximately 60,000 pounds, the falttener has capacity to crush up to 159 tons with state-of-the-art controls and automation.
