Sims Limited Launched New Technology for ASR Conversion

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sims Metal, in collaboration with scrap recycling firms operating in Australia, North America and the United Kingdom has launched a new technology to convert the nonmetallic portion of auto shredder residue (ASR) into a synthesis gas (syngas) product.

Sims has already announced establishment of a pilot plant in Rocklea, Australia, near Brisbane to further research into the technology and check its viability. The proposed plant will focus on testing the commercial viability of the new technology and conduct experiments on developing new products from the left-over materials of metal recycling operation.

According to company website, the plasma gasification technology heats the ASR and transforms it into a mixture of clean gases known as syngas, in addition to a glass-like product. The process does not involve burning of ASR, thus preventing harmful emissions. The syngas will be converted to olefins, which in turn will help in production of recycled-content plastic. The glass-like byproduct could be used as a paving material aggregate, it noted.

The development application for the pilot facility has been submitted to Brisbane City Council. Upon necessary regulatory approval, Sims expects the pilot plant to be operational by 2022.
