Second Phase of Single-Use Plastic Ban Launched

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Upper Merion Township officials announced that the second phase of the single-use plastic ban has come into effect starting Monday, July 1, 2024. The annual plastic bag usage by Upper Merion residents is estimated at around 18.5 million, sources said.

Accordingly, public establishments will be prohibited from offering plastic utensils. The customers will no longer be allowed to use plastic forks or spoons at restaurants within the Montgomery County Township. Meantime, stores and takeout spots will be allowed to charge 10 cents per reusable bag to cover rising costs.

The Single-Use Product Regulations ordinance was passed in July 2023. The township had implemented the first phase of the ordinance in January this year, intended to regulate the use of single-use plastic products. As a result, businesses were prohibited from handing out single use plastic carry-out bags, straws and expanded polystyrene food service products at restaurants.

The violation of the ordinance will attract a written warning. The business found violating it even after warning will be charged $50 for the first violation, $100 for the second violation and $250 per violation for the third and subsequent violations. The goal of the ban is to reduce litter and save the environment, said township officials.
