Scrap metal recycler consolidates Indiana auto recycling operations

AUBURN (Scrap Monster): Burnham, Chicago-headquartered Scrap Metal Services, LLC (SMS) has announced plans to consolidate its Indiana auto recycling operations. As part of its restructuring plan, the company has decided to idle three of its SMS Paul’s auto yard operations in Indiana. The yards to be idled are the ones in Demotte, Elkhart and Westville. Earlier during the year, SMS had idled its Coloma, Michigan yard.

After the closure of three yards, the company is left with three more yards in the region. The remaining SMS Paul’s Auto Yard locations in South Bend, Gary and Lake Station will continue to offer full-service auto yard and recycling services. The autoshredder operations in New Carlisle, Indiana will continue uninterrupted, it said. At the same time, the company made it clear that the closed yards will be reopened only if business conditions show significant improvement.

The company had created a new division called SMS Paul’s Auto Yard after large scale acquisitions of Paul’s Auto Yard Inc. and Shafer’s Auto Yard Inc. in 2014.
