SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. announced publication of its Fiscal 2020 Sustainability Report. The report titled “Resourceful. Responsible. Resilient” highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to generate lasting positive impact and the strong progress that it has made on several sustainability goals.
The recycling of scrap metal by the company has resulted in diverting millions of tons of materials every year, which might have otherwise ended in landfills. The company’s scrap metal consumption by various metals recycling facilities is estimated at nearly 4 million tons of ferrous and 550 million pounds of non-ferrous scrap during fiscal 2020. The growth in number of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills across globe will further boost the requirement for recycled metals for many more years to come, said Tamara Lundgren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Schnitzer Steel.
The company reported 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at its recycling operations. Also, it exceeded the 90% carbon-free electricity goal well before the end of fiscal 2025. Schnitzer Steel has now set an enhanced sustainability goal to achieve 100% net carbon-free electricity use by the end of fiscal 2022.
In addition, the company’s recordable incident rate during fiscal 2020 was the lowest and best recorded in the company’s history.
