SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Portland, Oregon-based leader in recycled metal products Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. announced launch of GRN Steel- a line of net zero carbon products. The launch of the new product line from its Cascades Steel manufacturing operations at McMinnville, Oregon marks an important step towards achieving the company’s sustainability goal of Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
According to company press release, Cascade will join hands with ACT commodities towards implementing carbon offset projects to address Scope 1 emissions from the manufacturing of GRN Steel. Upon sale, the company will retire credits in an amount commensurate with the carbon footprint of steel ordered. A major part of electricity used at these manufacturing facilities is carbon-free hydropower, thus ensuring minimal Scope 2 emissions, it noted.
Tamara Lundgren, Chairman and CEO, Schnitzer Steel noted that the introduction of the new product line illustrates the company’s longstanding reputation for delivering exceptional service and innovative products over the last 50 years. GRN Steel represents the next critical step for the company, by way of offering sustainable solutions to meet the needs of an increasingly metal-intensive economy, he added.
