SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Indian state-run steel producer Steel Authority of India Limitedu2019s (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has developed a new steel product for use in the high-speed, Mumbai coastal road project, a company statement said on Monday, October 30.
The company said that, during an interaction with the contractor involved in the road project, the latter suggested production of thermo-mechanically-treated (TMT) of grade Fe-550D wire rod and hence BSP developed 8 mm Fe-550D for the first time.
For developing the new product, steel melting shop III produced the required heat with a rich chemistry of carbon and manganese, the spokesperson said. The input billets cast with that material help the TMT bars achieve the required strength and optimum ductility with existing parameters.
The rolling parameters like furnace temperature, laying head temperature, water quenching parameters, and a number of hot turns at the ends of coils were monitored and recorded during rolling. The online samples of the first three coils were taken and sent for mechanical testing.
The company said that the product would be used in the prestigious road project being constructed involving an eight-lane Mumbai coastal road 29.20-km long and running along Mumbai's western coastline.
